The present invention relates to a measuring amplifier 103 for performing background calibration and adjustment and a method for performing background calibration and adjustment of such a measuring amplifier. The measurement amplifier amplifies, digitizes, and processes at least one measurement signal 111 of at least one measurement transducer 102 using at least one amplification device 108. This amplifying device is temporarily replaced by an additional amplifying device 107, which allows uninterrupted calibration of the amplifying device and adjustment as necessary. By this calibration, the zero point error and the amplification error of the amplifying device can be reliably calculated. Furthermore, the amplifying device is not calibrated indirectly but is calibrated directly. Therefore, high accuracy is achieved without interrupting the measurement. Furthermore, usually only one additional amplification device is required in measuring amplifiers with multiple channels.
