This invention provides a method for producing a carboxylic acid, which comprises the following steps: providing magnesium carboxylate, wherein the carboxylic acid corresponding to the carboxylate has a solubility in water at 20 ° C of 80 g / 100 g of water or less; acidifying the magnesium carboxylate with HCl to obtain a solution containing carboxylic acid and magnesium chloride (MgCl); possibly a concentration step, where the solution containing the carboxylic acid and MgCl2 is concentrated; precipitating the carboxylic acid from a solution containing carboxylic acid and MgCl to obtain a precipitate of carboxylic acid and MgCl solution.
