This invention provides a method for producing a carboxylic acid, which comprises the following steps: providing magnesium carboxylate, wherein the carboxylic acid corresponding to the carboxylate has a solubility in water at 20 ° C of 80 g / 100 g of water or less; acidifying the magnesium carboxylate with HCl to obtain a solution containing carboxylic acid and magnesium chloride (MgCl); possibly a concentration step, where the solution containing the carboxylic acid and MgCl2 is concentrated; precipitating the carboxylic acid from a solution containing carboxylic acid and MgCl to obtain a precipitate of carboxylic acid and MgCl solution. It was found that the addition of HCl to the magnesium salt of the carboxylic acid and the subsequent precipitation of the carboxylic acid from the solution leads to a very effective separation of the carboxylic acid from the magnesium carboxylate solution.
