In one aspect, the invention provides a three phase induction generator comprising a bifurcated set of stator windings for each of three phase of the three phase induction generator, wherein the bifurcated set comprises a first set of windings configured as excitation winding set and a second of windings configured as output winding set. This configuration is capable of producing three phase sinusoidal voltages at constant frequency at all speeds without a power electronic interface when driven from a variable speed prime mover such as a wind turbine.
