Disclosed herein is cationic biosurfactant immobilized functionalized nanoporous activated carbon matrix. The nanoporous activated carbon is treated with ketone and diarnine to form functionalized Nanoporous activated carbon which in turn binds with the cationic biosurfactant. The product can be made in the form of capsules and used fbr the in situ remediation of heavy metal contaminated sites. After the saturation, the capsules can be removed and regenerated by cation exchange method and recovery of heavy metal is possible. Thus, an efficient removal process for heavy metals is provided.
