The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a graphite copper composite electrode material which is capable of reducing electrode consumption to the practical level; and an electrode for electrical discharge machining which uses this material. A graphite copper composite electrode material which is obtained by impregnating pores of a base that is formed of a graphite material with copper and which has an electrical resistivity of 2.5 µOm or less preferably 1.5 µOm or less and more preferably 1.0 µOm or less. It is desirable that the anisotropy ratio of the base that is formed of a graphite material is 1.2 or less. It is desirable that the impregnation ratio (f) of copper in the electrode material is 13% or more. It is desirable that the bulk density of the base that is formed of a graphite material is from 1.40 Mg/m to 1.85 Mg/m (inclusive).
