The present disclosure relates to an ethyl acetate extract from Allium sativum Linn which has anti-mycobacterial activity. The extract exhibiting anti-mycobactreial activity was found to be a linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS). Rifampicin, one of the major pharmaceutical compound used in treatment of mycobacterial diseases like tuberculosis and leprosy, was found to be profoundly influenced by the presence of LAS in mycobacterial liquid culture in combating the bacterial growth. Morphological examination by scanning electron microscope and cell leakage assay indicated that these molecules change the membrane fluidity of the mycobacterium. Thus the present invention discloses a method of increasing the membrane permeability of the mycobacterium, to enhance the efficiency of the antibiotic to combat mycobacterial diseases.
