The invention relates to an apparatus which is constructed and set so as to cut slices on material packs formed by materials in the tobacco processing industry. The apparatus comprises a supply element used for making material packs conveyed along a conveying direction T to the acting zone of a cutting knife, the cutting knife itself, a cutting bench arranged behind the supply element along the conveying direction T, and a corresponding fixed plate arranged above the cutting bench. The cutting bench is provided with a driving mechanism used for leaving the supply element along the conveying direction T and moving towards the supply element in a direction opposite to the conveying direction T. The corresponding fixed plate can be also opposed to the conveying direction T and move along the conveying direction T. The apparatus is characterized in that the corresponding fixed plate is not configured in a driving way and can passively move along a horizontally oriented linear guiding mechanism, along the conveying direction T or along a direction opposite to the conveying direction T when receiving a heavy load.
