A data processing apparatus (1) for teaching keeps a data record of questions (2) and a data record (4) of student answers to those questions. A new student is tested by the same questions and in cases where he or she gives a wrong answer the data processing apparatus (1) presents the new student with a question that other of the students who answered the same question wrong, also got wrong. The apparatus works on the basis that students who have similar deficiencies in their understanding are likely to struggle with the same sorts of questions, and can therefore be assisted by increased encounters with questions of that type.
