A type A botulinum neurotoxin for use in the treatment of pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, where said botulinum neurotoxin is prepared for local administration limited to a body site at a site that is distant from the painful site, where local administration is not in the central nervous system (CNS), and where an analgesic effect is achieved on the ipsilateral side and on the contra-lateral side.
