Procedure to characterize a tumor selected from the group comprising diffuse astrocytoma, oligoastrocytoma, anaplastic astrocytoma, anaplastic oligoastrocytoma, pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma and anaplastic oligodendroglioma in an isolated sample of a human subject that has a tumor, which comprises isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) or isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2) gene or mRNA transcribed from the gene in the human subject or the translated mRNA protein, to identify residue 132 or a codon for residue 132 of IDH1 or residue 172 or a codon for residue 172 of IDH2, in which a mutation is identified if it is identified that the residue or codon for the residue is different from arginine.
