Method for characterizing a tumor of glioblatoma multiforme (GBM) in a human subject, comprising: analyzing a test sample of a GBM tumor obtained from the human subject to identify the presence or absence of a somatic mutation in: * the codon 132 in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1); or * codon 172 in isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2).
