A method to enhance the fermentation efficiency of a microorganism for the production of beer, cider, wine, a biofuel, bread, a dairy product or any combination thereof, the method comprising: providing a fermentation medium containing a source of carbon and a microorganism capable of fermenting and contacting the fermentation medium with methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), wherein the MSM is provided at a concentration of 0.02% to 5% by weight of the fermentation medium or at a concentration of 0, 02% to 5% by weight of the moisture content of the fermentation medium, where the MSM increases the fermentation efficiency of the microorganism compared to the fermentation efficiency in the absence of MSM.
