Provided are: a hard coat film having a base material film and a hard layer disposed on at least one of the surfaces of the base material film, wherein the hard layer is obtained by curing an active energy ray curable resin composition, the film thickness of the hard layer is greater than 10 µm, the hard layer contains polyrotaxane, inorganic fine particles having an average primary particle diameter less than 2 µm, and mat particles having an average primary particle diameter not less than 2 µm, and the contained mass of the mat particles in the hard layer is not less than 0.10 g/cm³, the hard coat film configured as described above can achieve both sufficient surface ruggedness and high surface hardness on the thick hard layer containing the inorganic fine particles; a front surface plate of an image display element; a resistance film type touch panel; a capacitance type touch panel; and an image display apparatus.
