According to the present invention there is provided a method for computing the exact NLS cost function for real-valued data very efficiently on a Fourier grid for all model orders up to L. Specifically, the method reduces the computational complexity to the same order as that of the harmonic summation method, i.e., O(F log F) + O(FL). The method comprises solving the equation (35) for αl, where solving the equation comprises the steps of: (i) partitioning the matrix A|(ω0) into Toeplitz and Hankel matrixes; (ii) selecting a start index n0; (iii) separating the equation (35) into a system of two equations: (51, 52) and solving the system of two equations (51, 52).
