Provided is a method using an aluminum-titanium alloy having a high titanium content as a reducing agent to prepare titanium or a titanium-aluminum alloy. The method comprises the following steps: (1) forming a solid powder from an aluminum-titanium alloy having a high titanium content; (2) compounding the aluminum-titanium alloy having a high titanium content with sodium fluorotitanate or sodium fluorotitanate and a sodium fluoride powder at proportions suitable for forming titanium or a titanium-aluminum alloy and causing a process side reaction; (3) after mixing evenly, performing pressing to form a mass, performing thermite reduction, and performing vacuum distillation to isolate titanium or a titanium-aluminum alloy and a titanium-containing cryolite; (4) after evenly mixing the titanium-containing cryolite, an aluminum powder and an aluminum-titanium alloy having a low titanium content, performing a thermite reduction in a non-vacuum environment under a normal pressure by using a non-inert gas to generate an aluminum-titanium alloy having a low titanium content, an aluminum-titanium alloy having a high titanium content and a cryolite containing no titanium; and (5) employing the aluminum-titanium alloy having a low titanium content as a part of a reducing agent and returning to the step (4) to use the same; or employing the aluminum-titanium alloy having a high titanium content as a reducing agent and returning to the step (1) to use the same.
