A tyre (1) for a vehicle intended to support heavy loads, this tyre being provided with a protective device (10) for protecting at least one of its sidewalls (30) from external attack, this protective device (10) being formed so as to be located between the axially outermost part of the sidewall when the tyre is inflated and an axially outer edge of the tread, this protective device (10) being formed from a relief element (100) of height H disposed so as to run all the way round the tyre, this tyre being such that the relief element forming the protective device comprises a succession of portions that are oriented circumferentially and portions that are not oriented circumferentially and make a non-zero angle A with respect to the portions that are oriented circumferentially, these portions being disposed alternately with one another, and such that this relief element forming the protective device comprises, at least on the portions that are oriented circumferentially, a cut for forming parts (101, 102) that are able to come into rubbing contact when one of said parts comes into contact with an external obstacle.
