Provided are: a near-infrared absorbent composition with which a membrane having excellent infrared shielding properties and visible transparency can be produced; a membrane; an infrared cut filter; a solid-state imaging element; an infrared absorbent; and a compound. The near-infrared absorbent composition includes a resin and a squarylium compound represented by formula (1) and having a maximum absorption wavelength of 700 nm or greater. In the formula, Ar1 and Ar2 each independently represent a divalent conjugated group including a heteroaryl ring having a chalcogen atom, and R1-R4 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent. The membrane and the infrared cut filter are each formed of the near-infrared absorbent composition. The solid-state imaging element includes the infrared cut filter.
