The subject matter of the present invention is a method for manufacturing an optical element for compensating regular astigmatism, with total or partial tolerance to the rotation of the optical element relative to the axis of astigmatism of the eye. The method involves defining the surface of the optical element in such a way that the wavefront aberration of the eye due to regular astigmatism is compensated by the wavefront produced by the optical element. This compensation includes introducing high-order aberrations, in terms of Zernike polynomials, into the refractive profile of the optical element, in order to optimise the visual quality of the same in a range of rotation errors relative to the axis of astigmatism to be compensated. The invention also relates to optical elements such as contact lenses that can compensate regular astigmatism and are manufactured by said method.
