A tool (100) for temporarily retaining a coupling seal between two pipe members comprises a portion (10) for retaining the seal, contained between two sliding surfaces (S1, S2), and a positioning member (20) rigidly connected to the seal-retaining portion. The tool determines a position of the seal relative to one of the pipe members when the positioning member is in abutting contact with said pipe member . The tool can then be withdrawn laterally when the two pipe members are coupled. The reliability and sealing tightness of the coupling are improved.
