A method for stochastically predicting the fatigue life of materials, comprising: sampling (41) a random variable for an actual equivalent initial defect size (EIFS); Fatigue crack growth equation from multivariate distribution Generating (42) random variables for the parameters (InC, m); And solving 43 the fatigue crack growth equation using these random variables. The reported EIFS data is obtained by scanning the target object ultrasonically, recording the echo signals from the target object, and converting the echo signal amplitudes to equivalent reflector sizes using previously recorded values from the scanned calibration block. Equivalent reflector sizes include reported EIFS data.;
