The described embodiments relate to methods of functionalizing aspartin materials and compositions made from functionalized asphalins. Methods for the synthesis of graphene derivatives, such as functional materials, such as graphene 2D mono-crystalline carbon isomers and sulfonic acids and their derivatives, have been disclosed. It is also possible to use chemical substitution reaction mechanisms such as electrophilic aromatic substitution, nucleophilic aromatic substitution and the Zantemeyer mechanism, as a source of graphene derivatives and functional materials, such as 0D, 1D, 2D and combinations of 0D and 1D. A method of converting asphaltenes is disclosed. In addition, new graphene materials including acetylene bonds and hydrogenated graphenes are disclosed. New materials that can be prepared by these methods include the following examples: 2D (asymmetric) units of graphene having a 2D single crystal with unitary C7H6N2O4, C6H4N2O4, C7H7O3S-H3O +, C7H7O3SH + Single crystal carbon isotope.
