The processor is described as having an instruction execution pipeline having a functional unit for executing instructions that compare vector components to an input value. Each of the vector components and the input value has a first respective section identifying a location in the data and a second respective section having a byte sequence of data. The functional unit has a comparison circuit for comparing each byte sequence of input vector components with respect to a byte sequence of input values to identify the number of matching bytes for each comparison. The functional unit also has a difference circuit for determining the respective distances between the byte sequences of the components of the input vector in the data and the byte sequence of the input values.
