The present invention relates to a method of producing a metal germanide/carbon composite, comprising the steps of: (a) mixing transition metal powder, germanium (Ge) powder, and carbon (C) powder; and (b) applying a mechanical energy to the mixed powder to produce a composite containing a transition metal germanide and carbon (C). According to the method of the present invention, by using ball-milling which is a simple solid synthesis method, a composite containing a transition metal germanide and carbon is produced in a simple and efficient manner without going through a complicated and inefficient process as in a chemical method. Additionally, the composite containing a transition metal germanide and carbon produced by the method, when used as an electrode active material in a secondary battery, can overcome the drawbacks of conventional lithium alloy-based electrode materials for lithium secondary batteries, including the problem of decreasing lifetime caused by volume expansion. Further, the composite of the present invention has excellent initial efficiency while maintaining high capacity, and thus can be used to realize a lithium secondary battery system having high capacity and excellent cycle life.
