The present invention relates to an omega-6 fatty acid desaturase (delta 12 fatty acid deaturase; FAD) derived from arctic Chlamydomonas sp. ArF0006, a wild gene or a mutant gene encoding the enzyme, and a method for producing unsaturated fatty acids using the same. According to the present invention, the omega-6 fatty acid desaturase derived from arctic Chlamydomonas sp. ArF0006 (ArticChaclydomonas sp. ArF0006) effectively increases the production of oleic acids and linoleic acids, thereby being useful in other high value-added industries including bioenergy raw material production.
