A nanocomposite material having at least two layers, each layer consisting of one metal oxide bonded to at least one graphene layer, has been developed. The nanocomposite typically has a plurality of alternating layers of a metal oxide layer and a graphene layer, the alternating layers being bonded in a sandwich structure, and the nanocomposite material may be incorporated into an electrochemical or energy storage device.
