The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating cancer containing a marine algae Sargassum thunbergii extract as an active ingredient. The Sargassum thunbergii extract is obtained by undergoing extraction using a solvent mixture of acetone and methylene chloride, and induces apoptosis in U87MG glioblastoma, thereby inhibiting proliferation of cancer cells. Accordingly, the Sargassum thunbergii extract can be applied as a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating cancer as well as a health food composition for preventing ameliorating cancer.
