A method for monitoring of gears; wherein a first component of a first transmission as a critical and a second component of the first transmission is classified as not critical; wherein the first component of the first transmission is designed in such a way that all operating states of a set of predefined operating states to a failure of the first component; and wherein the second component of the first transmission is designed in such a way that operating states of a first subset of the amount of the predefined operating states to a failure of the second component; with the following process steps of: measuring at least one physical size of the first transmission and / or at least one to the first transmission impacting physical parameter; identifying a operating state of the first transmission on the basis of the physical size and / or of the physical parameter; and checking whether the identified operating state is contained in the first subset.
