The invention relates to a method and a system for determining an optimal driving strategy to be adopted by a motor vehicle (1) when said motor vehicle (1) approaches a traffic light (2), the method comprising a step reception by an onboard system (10) on said motor vehicle (1) of a message emitted by said traffic light (2), a step of determining a total distance of the path separating the motor vehicle from the traffic light. According to the invention, the method further comprises determining at least two rolling strategies that can be adopted by the motor vehicle to travel said total distance; estimating the amounts of pollutants emitted by the motor vehicle by adopting each of said at least two rolling strategies; and selecting, from among said at least two rolling strategies, the optimum rolling strategy for which the amount of pollutants emitted is the lowest.
