A cover or glove unit for a duck-billed vaginal speculum comprises a membrane 6 that connects the edges of the speculum to prevent prolapsing or protrusion of the vaginal walls between blades of the speculum 8. The membrane may be reinforced, preferably by the inclusion of plastic rods 7. Reinforcement of the glove unit may also be provided by inflation of a balloon positioned between layers of the membrane. Hooks 10 may be provided at a rim of the glove unit for holding the glove unit in place on the speculum. Pockets or cavities 11 may be provided for insertion of the blades of the speculum. Also disclosed is a duck-billed speculum with the glove unit of the invention already fitted.
