Methods and apparatus for real-time machine vision and point cloud data analysis are provided for remote sensing and vehicle control. Point cloud data can be analyzed via a scalable centralized cloud computing system to extract asset information and generate semantic maps. The data storage / preprocessor (1220) subdivides the data set for streaming to the distributed processing unit (1240) and operation via the data analysis mechanism (1250). The output of processing unit (1240) is aggregated by map generator (1230). Machine learning components optimize data analysis mechanisms to improve asset and feature extraction from sensor data. The optimized data analysis facility may be downloaded to the vehicle for use in an onboard system that analyzes the vehicle sensor data. The semantic map data can be used locally within the vehicle, along with the mounted sensors, leading to precise vehicle location confirmation and providing input to the vehicle to control the system.
