PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a stress luminescent material exhibiting, in response even to miniscule strains, a luminescence superior to those of stress luminescent materials of the prior art.SOLUTION: The provided method includes: an ionized solution preparation step of preparing, by dissolving, into a solvent, salts of aluminum and an alkaline earth metal element constituting a matrix material and a salt of a luminescent center element, a solution wherein the aluminum, alkaline earth metal element, and luminescent center element are ionized within the same solvent; an evaporation/solidification step of obtaining a dry powder by evaporating the solvent of the solution obtained at the same ionized solution preparation step; an oxidation step of obtaining, by heating, within an oxidizing atmosphere, the dry powder obtained at the evaporation/solidification step, a mixed powder of the oxide of aluminum, the oxide of the alkaline earth metal element, and the oxide of the luminescent center element; and a firing step of firing the mixed powder obtained at the oxidation step following the addition thereto of a sintering adjuvant over a specified time within a reducing atmosphere having a temperature higher than that of the oxidation step so as to avail the obtained powder as a stress luminescent material.
