Recovery of physiological functions in iron-deficient organisms using small molecules

Provided are methods for treating diseases or conditions characterized by defects or defects in iron transporters using small molecules. For example, the method can enhance transepithelial iron transport or enhance ion release. Further, the small molecule may be hinokitiol or may be selected from the group consisting of amphotericin B, calcimycin, nonactin, deferiprone, purprogalin, and maltol. Also provided are methods of identifying compounds that can treat a disease or condition characterized by a defect or defect in an iron transporter.
