The invention provides an activin receptor type II inhibitor for use in a method for treating anemia, chronic pernicious anemia, sickle cell anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, inherited bone marrow failure, or beta-thalassemia, or for increasing red blood cell levels or orthochromatic erythroblasts (Ery-C) in a subject in need of treatment, wherein the subject treated has, or has been determined to have, an elevated level and/or activity of GDF11 in a tissue as compared to the level/or activity of GDF11 in the same tissue of one or more healthy subjects.
