PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for determining the life/death activity of a non-sphere cell which determine the life/death of a plurality of individual cells simultaneously without damaging the cell.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for determining the life/death activity of a non-sphere cell comprising, in order, the steps of: enclosing a non-sphere cell suspension 22 into a cell 2 comprising a transparent electrode 21a and 21b in which a bottom face is opposed to an upper face, the cell where at least a liquid contacting face of the bottom face is coated with a transparent insulating thin film 20; measuring a light transmittance Tin the state where a frequency is not applied; applying the frequency which erects all the cells 23 and 24 to the pair of transparent electrodes to measure a light transmittance T; applying the frequency which selectively overturns a dead cell 23 to the pair of transparent electrodes to measure a light transmittance T; and calculating the upright ratio of living cells from the value of the light transmittance.
