An acceleration control system that allows an operator of a ship to select an acceleration profile for controlling the engine speed of the ship is provided. A method for controlling the speed of a ship includes accelerating the ship in response to a launch command. The method then includes the controller maintaining the boat speed at a desired boat speed by using feedback control. In response to determining that the following condition is true, the controller introduces a differential term for feedback control in stages.
