The smaller and more uniform residual stresses are established by the very uniform thin layer of carbide bonded to the carbide substrate through an interface with composition close to the sintered diamond body and the substrate, improving the adhesion of the interface between the layers. A new pure niobium binder is also used to improve the properties of the diamond layer, and as the interface also contains niobium, it may exhibit better adhesion.
