The present disclosure relates to compositions and methods for treating autistic spectrum disorder (tea) by restoring an intestinal microbiota of the tea patient. These methods may be used with patients with teas with or without current gastrointestinal symptoms. A method for treating tea in an individual in need thereof comprising or essentially comprising administering a therapeutic composition comprising a fecal microbe or a fecal microbiota preparation to the subject is provided herein. Also provided herein is a method comprising administering an antibiotic to a human subject; subject the human individual to intestinal cleansing; and administering purified fecal microbiota to the human subject. Further assessment and quantitative characterization of patient symptom improvements are provided by the treatment described herein.
