cotton harvester row drive, and, method for operating cotton harvester row drive, a cotton harvester row drive includes belt drive and a variable transmission to reduce noise and optimize rotational speeds. spindle and shredder while allowing the rotation speed of the spindle drum structure to change with changes in harvester speed. In one possible embodiment, a variable speed motor drives the ring gear of a planetary gear assembly to vary between the spindle and defibrator speed ratio and drum speed. The planetary gear set can be enclosed to also help reduce noise and reduce grease consumption. Nearly constant spindle and defibrator speeds can be maintained over a wide range of drum toting speeds, and higher speeds can be limited to prevent operation above critical component speeds. the transmission can be configured to reduce or completely eliminate gear disengagement from the drum centerline to thereby reduce row unit manufacturing accuracy, and a relatively low power motor can be used to adjust the ratio between spindle and defibrator speed with drum speed.
