The invention relates to a method of increasing the content of titanium oxide in the slag obtained by electric melting of titanomagnetite, the method including feeding titanomagnetite, reducing agent and flux to an electric furnace, melting titanomagnetite, reducing agent and flux in an electric furnace with the formation of a layer containing liquid metal and slag, above the layer containing the liquid metal, and extracting the liquid metal and slag separately from the electric furnace. The flux comprises from 3 to 100% by weight of a material containing titanium oxide, such as ilmenite.
