The present invention relates to a method for controlling platooning operation of a platoon (P1) of vehicles (1, 2, 3,4) along a road (R). The method comprises the step of determining (S1) the intention of a vehicle in the platoon (P1) to leave the platoon (P1). The method further comprises the steps of: determining (S2) external characteristics comprising configuration of the road and/or weather conditions; and determining (S3) a suitable position along said road for said vehicle intending to leave the platoon (P1) to leave the platoon (P1) based upon said external characteristics so as to optimize the energy consumption in connection to said vehicle in the platoon (P1) leaving the platoon (P1) and to rearrange said platoon (P1) after said vehicle has left the platoon (P1). The present invention also relates to a system for controlling platooning operation of a platoon (P1) of vehicles along a road (R). The present invention also relates to a platoon (P1).
