A method to predict in a patient suffering from cardiovascular disease and / or diabetes and who will undergo a surgical procedure, the risk of suffering an acute kidney injury during or immediately after the surgical procedure, said method comprising the steps of: a) determine the amount of GDF-15 in a sample of the patient that has been obtained before the patient undergoes the surgical procedure; and b) compare the determined amount with a reference amount, whereby the risk of the patient suffering from acute kidney injury during or immediately after the surgical procedure is predicted.
