The present invention relates to novel expression cassettes and expressionvectors, comprisingthree nucleic acid sequences for araA, araB and araD, each coding for apolypeptide of anL-arabinose metabolic pathway, in particular, a bacterial L-arabinosemetabolic pathway. Theinvention particularly relates to expression cassettes and expression vectors,comprisingcodon-optimised nucleic acid sequences for araA, araB and araD. The inventionfurtherrelates to host cells, in particular modified yeast strains containing theexpression cassettes orexpression vectors and expressing the polypeptides for the L-arabinosemetabolic pathway, inparticular, for the bacterial L-arabinose metabolic pathway. When using thesemodified hostcells, arabinose is more effectively fermented by these cells, in particularinto ethanol. Thepresent invention is therefore relevant, inter alia, in connection with theproduction ofbiochemicals from biomass, such as bioethanol for example.
