An intermodal container scanning system utilizing radiation detection, and a scanning method. The intermodal container scanning system is installed in a container yard to scan goods in a container, and comprises: a radiation generation device (2, 20, 20', 20") used to emit radiation, a radiation receiving device (6, 60, 60', 60") used to receive the radiation, and at least one chamber (11, 11', 12, 13, 30, 30', 30") used to accommodate the radiation generation device and the radiation receiving device. Each of the at least one chamber is configured to be a standardized container, or have a same shape, size, and structure as those of the standardized container, so as to facilitate disposition of the intermodal container scanning system in a container yard.
