The invention relates to a method for autonomous geolocation and an associated device for determining the position of a person traveling on foot or by means of a non-motorized vehicle using inertial data measured while the person is traveling. An elementary mode of travel is recognized by comparing the inertial data measured with predetermined signatures, each signature being previously associated in a unique manner with an elementary mode of travel independently of the person in question. The speed and direction of the travel of the person are then estimated according the recognized elementary mode of travel and according to all or part of the measured inertial data. The position of the person is then evaluated according to the estimated speed and direction of travel and the position evaluated during a previous iteration.
