The invention relates to a method for detecting an object in a region (9) surrounding a motor vehicle (1), wherein the object is detected within a first detection region (10) by means of a first ultrasonic sensor (4), and the first detection region (10) of the first ultrasonic sensor (4) is located above a first detection height (h1). In order to detect the object, at least one echo of the ultrasonic signal, which is reflected by the object, is received by means of the first ultrasonic sensor (4), and the object is classified as a high object or as a low object using the at least one received echo. In order to check the plausibility of the classification of the object as a high object, a check is carried out in order to determine whether the object is detected with a second ultrasonic sensor (5) within a second detection region (11). The second detection region (11) of the second ultrasonic sensor (5) is located above a second detection height (h2) which is higher than the first detection height (h1).
