The present invention relates to a performance estimation apparatus of a rudder and an area determination method of a rudder using the same, which determine a suitable rudder area with consideration for vessel maneuvering performance in the situation where an environment external force applied to a vessel is effective when the vessel passes through a narrow region such as a canal. The performance estimation apparatus of a rudder according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a rudder controller controlling the rudder; and a simulator which sets a cross-section of the canal through which the vessel passes, calculates a distance between the vessel, which is transferred by action of the environment external force set to a specific sea area where the canal is located while the rudder is controlled by the rudder controller, and a pier of the canal, and determines the area of the rudder with consideration for the vessel maneuvering performance by performing a simulation of increasing the area of the rudder when a collision occurs between the vessel and the pier of the canal through the calculated distance.
