Disclosed are a method and apparatus for controlling an LED based on an SMPS. The method for controlling an LED based on a switched mode power supply (SMPS) includes the steps of: enabling the SMPS to receive a control signal through a communication unit; enabling the SMPS to generate a control signal as a plurality of pulse width modulation (PWM) signals based on a micro control unit (MCU); and enabling the SMPS to control each operation of a plurality of light emitting diode (LED) units receiving power from the SMPS based on each of the plurality of PWM signals.
