The present invention provides a cobalt oxide (Co_3O_4) for a lithium secondary battery having an improved density, a manufacturing method thereof, a lithium cobalt oxide formed from the cobalt oxide, and a lithium secondary battery including a positive electrode including the same. The cobalt oxide for a lithium secondary battery has an intensity ratio of a second peak with 2θ of 31.3±1° with respect to a first peak with 2θ of 19±1° in an X-ray diffraction analysis, which is 0.8 to 1.2, and has a tap density of 2.8 to 3.0 g/cc.
