The present invention relates to an electronic system for generating secret information having a physical unclonable function (PUF). The PUF provides a difference between two physical variables of the PUF in response to a challenge applied to the PUF. The system applies a series of challenges during a registration step, and measures a physical variable difference provided by the PUF in response to each challenge. The system comprises a helper data generating unit (2) which generates helper data including a set of bits. A bit of the helper data is generated in relation to each of applied challenges. The helper data generating unit generates each helper data bit from the physical variable difference provided by the PUF in response to application of the related challenge. The system further comprises a secret information generating unit which extracts the secret information from the helper data.
