The present invention relates to a novel hot pepper-derived Capsicum annuum abscisic acid-induced ethylene responsive factor 1 (CaAIEF1) gene/protein, and a method for improving drought stress tolerance of a plant by using the same. The present invention has identified a CaAIEF1 gene that encodes a drought tolerance-enhancing protein; has confirmed that the CaAIEF1 protein functions as a positive regulator in the ABA signaling; and has confirmed drought stress-enhancing effects in a transformed plant in which the protein is overexpressed. Accordingly, the present invention can be used in the modification of crops and the like usable by the mankind through regulating the expression of CaAIEF1 gene, and can be beneficially used particularly in improving the productivity of plants.
